Wain Wath Force is a waterfall situated on the River Swale which flows beneath the limestone cliffs of Cotterby Scar upstream from the hamlet of Keld. The river is created by the merging of Birkdale Beck and Great Sleddale Beck as they tumble off the Pennine Watershed.
The falls in the north of England are often termed “Forces” after the Norse word “Foss” which means waterfall.
