Outer Hebrides
The Outer Hebrides, from the Norse word Harbredey meaning the isles at the edge of the sea, also known as the Western Isles have been inhabited for more than 6000 years. There are literally hundreds of islands in this 150 mile long chain to the west of Scotland.
The isles with their combination of beautiful landscapes, lochs and sea lochs, clean sandy beaches, wild flowers, flora and fauna, provide landscapes of national importance and four areas have been designated National Nature Reserves.
